Undertow Review

Undertow was the promised game to the XBOX Live Gold Users for the problems with the service over the Christmas holidays. It is an underwater sidescroller where you can take control 1 of 3 different units, and when in base areas can changed into those units. This game is powered by the Unreal 3 engine which means pretty graphics.

So for the graphics I say, they didn't need to use the Unreal Engine, the game doesn't give the engine its dues. There are pretty backgrounds, but you don't get to interact with them, and the levels look nice but really they don't look like they are being powered by the Unreal Engine.

The controls are pretty simple, you have the left analog stick to control your movement, and then you have the right analog to control your firing. There are also other buttons to control your upgrades and such.

The gameplay is basically control and conquer. There are a number of bases in the level and it is your job to try and control them all. With each base captured you get another location that you can spawn to when you die. To gain control of a base you have to have more units present at the base location. If the base is owned by the opponent you have to get rid of the opponent's influence before you can claim the base as your own.

This game really isn't my cup of tea, but it plays well, and looks pretty good even though, I'll say it again, I don't think the really needed the Unreal Engine. 7.8 out of 10
