Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots Review

Metal Gear Solid 4is the ending chapter in the Solid Snake story. This series has had ravenous fans since the first one came out and now the story ends and a lot of the characters' stories are revealed and some get closure. As in ever installation you'll be playing Snake and you'll have to sneak your way through level after level facing incredible odds and finding a way to get out alive.

To be honest I suck at sneaking around so I wasn't the stealthest of players, but as the game progressed I did gain a nifty little thing called accuracy and by the end of the game I was able to land headshots a good chunk of the time. The learning curve for someone like myself who hasn't played a MGS game since the first is a bit steep if you're not use to this type of game but after a while, at least for me, things started to fall into place. My main example is that it took me 5 and a half hours go get through the first of 5 acts, and yet in the end it took me right around 20 hours. I know it looks like not that big of an improvement, but I felt like the game started to flow once I started to roll.

Speaking of rolling the control scheme for this game felt good, but there was always something else that you needed to learn. Something I never figured out how to do was to do a side roll. When Snake had to use other weapons or machines it was a bit confusing as to why some of the controls changed, but at the same time it made sense for certain vehicles. Don't worry though for those out there that think that snake will be cruising around constantly and not sneaking, it is very rare to see Snake doing anything else but being his sneaky walking around self.

The graphics of this game blew me away, and it made me deeply yearn for an HD TV I could feel the power that this game would have if I only had a HD TV, oh well one can always dream. The cut scenes were many and some of them quite long. I think when it comes down to it the game was half cinematics and the other half game play. I don't think that the scenes take away from the game, but in my opinion it added a level of corniness that made me roll my eyes from time to time.

Overall this game is solid, they really did a thurough job putting this one together and making sure that everything flowed, I just feel like there were certain parts of the game, mostly the cut scenes where if I were able to take control I could have ended the game a lot quicker. There was one thing that did make the cut scenes interesting, and that was the buttons that would appear in the corners of the screen. If you pushed the buttons you'd be awarded for your keen observation, so if you pick this game watch the scenes carefully.

I know that everyone is giving this game 10s and to be honest I can see where they are coming from, but I think that this game as good as it is isn't the pinnacle of what a video game is suppose to be, I think that this is a great example that every game developer should strive for, but I don't think it is the best that will ever be. With that I award this game a 9.5 out of 10
