MapleStory Review

MapleStory is one of those games that's been around for quite sometime. It is a free to play MMO which features 2-D side scrolling adventuring. Take on the world as a Warrior, Bowman, Magician, or Thief. Meet all sorts of characters and defeat a wide variety of enemies. The first 10ish levels you will be boud to a small island to learn how to play the game, it isn't until you have gained enough experience that you get to go to the real island.

The graphics are cartoony and simplistic, which I think really helps if there are lag issues on the server that you are on. When you equip different items you are actually able to see that different item on your character (even some of the big namers can't do that).

The music is light and playful and changes slightly depending on the region that you are in. After a while you may want to blast some of your personal music to drown out the repetitive music, but if you're going to be playing for short stints you should be fine.

The controls are the mirror opposite of the other Nexeon game that I reviewed (Maginobi). This time its keyboard intensive. You're going to be better off with two hands at all times but you can do some remapping to suit your needs. The mouse really isn't used very much, but it does show an occassional appearance right around equiping items and using items.

Now the problem with this game is that you are going to have to spend tons of time grinding to gain levels, and you're going to go through trial and error when it comes to spotting new creatures to attack, sometimes you'll be able to take them, most of the time you're going to get slaughtered. You will also be leveling up your stats every level, be careful not to spread the points all over the place, it makes it that much harder to take a profession once you are of the right level.Another bit of advice, don't sell items that you pick up no matter how useless they may seem they can come in handy when it comes to gathering quests. Finally if you don't want to sit around and collect thousands of mesos (the currency) to purchase an item in the shop you can always use your real hard earned cash and buy some exclusive items for your character to make them look and become bad ass.

If you are looking for a game that has linear movement and a map that really tells you where you are, and you don't mind putting in some heavy time this is the game for you. If you are looking for a game that is going to blow your mind away this might not be the best game then. I give this game a 7.4 out of 10 simply because I'm not a huge fan of penalizing a player for trying to actually play without buying items to pimp their character out.
